Psychosocial Support and Cancer

Telephone support as well as in-person support can provide helpful assistance to people with cancer and also caregivers. These forms of support contain the medicine of connection and offer new insights with, through, and beyond cancer.

Telephone Support

Do you sometimes want to talk with another person offering knowledge and understanding about your situation? Sometimes people with cancer need a compassionate listener in conversation with them on the other end of the phone line with some knowledge and understanding about their particular world in the midst of cancer.

Are you aware that some non-profit organizations offer psychosocial telephone support from trained professionals?

American Psychosocial Oncology Society

This might include learning new ways to cope with a cancer diagnosis, exploring and managing feelings, communication with family members, and other resources. Support is available over the phone and in person. Face-to-face support is provided in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Online and telephone support groups are also conducted through CancerCare.

Health professionals may request help on behalf of a client or patient. Services are available in English and Spanish. Psychosocial concerns addressed include emotion coping, a telephone or on-line support group, and bereavement resources. SurvivorCare staff is trained to discuss many other issues related to cancer.

Non-Profit Organizations Specializing in Specific Cancer Types

We recommend that you explore services available through non-profits with expertise in your cancer type. Although some issues confronted by people with cancer and their loved ones are universal, others are unique to the location of the disease. Non-profits may have staff members that are social workers and/or nurses who offer technical information as well as psychosocial support to people affected by cancer by telephone.

EmbodiWorks does not list cancer specific non-profit organizations. If you have not already, we suggest that you locate these organizations through Internet searches and resources with lists or directories of cancer specific non-profits.
