Supportive Detox Approaches

Baths

What is a bath and how does it detoxify?
A bath involves relaxing in warm water with therapeutic substances that help mobilize toxins out of the body through the skin.

What substances are used in baths to support detoxification?

  • One cup of baking soda and one cup of regular table or sea salt
  • One cup of apple cider vinegar
  • Epson salts that contain magnesium to relax muscles and sulfur to aid detoxification
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Clay
  • Essential oils such as eucalyptus and lavender

How often and for how long should I bathe?
Baths can be taken as often as once or twice daily. Rest in the bath for 20 to 30 minutes and allow time to rest after the bath.

Rebounder

What is a rebounder and how do I use it?
A rebounder is a mini-trampoline. Start bouncing with your feet on the mat. Some rebounders come with a stabilizer bar to hold while bouncing. Breathe deeply with inhales and exhales when rebounding.

How does a rebounder help the body detoxify?
Rebounding helps create movement within the body in part through stimulating the lymphatic system and strengthening the immune system. As the heart pumps blood, the lymphatic system needs physical activity to move and function. A well-functioning lymphatic system is essential for detoxification. The lymph system bathes every cell by providing nutrients and removing waste products.

How long and how often should I rebound?
Start rebounding for 2 to 5 minutes and increase your time if you feel comfortable. Rebounding for shorter durations more frequently may support lymphatic circulation better than for longer periods of time.

What if I do not have a rebounder?
Dance, and even if you have a rebounder.

Sauna

What is a sauna?
A sauna is a heated space with temperatures between 150 and 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

How does a sauna help the body detoxify?
Saunas help remove fat-stored toxins through the skin. Many toxins that are stored in the fat and blood such as PCBs, cadmium, lead, and industrial chemicals are excreted through the skin.

How much time should I spend in the sauna?
Begin staying in the sauna for 15 minutes and never stay for more than one hour.

Should I combine the sauna with other detoxification strategies?
Drink clean water before, during, and after your sauna. Saunas can also be combined with shower or water hydrotherapy alternating between a hot sauna and cold water. A cold rinse helps stimulate circulation in the skin and removes waste materials being excreted through it.

Shower Hydrotherapy

What is shower hydrotherapy?
Shower hydrotherapy involves taking a shower with periods of hot and cold water. Different techniques exist. Take a hot shower for 3 minutes, and then switch to cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat the cycle 3 times and end with the cold rinse. Some providers recommend going back and forth between hot and cold up to 7 times. Make sure you refresh your body heat after your shower.

How does shower hydrotherapy help the body detoxify?
Shower hydrotherapy enhances circulation, detoxification, and metabolism. The process also resets and helps to reorganize the nervous system.

Skin Brushing

What is skin brushing?
Skin brushing involves movements over dry skin with a dry brush.

How does skin brushing help the body detoxify?
Skin brushing increases blood and lymphatic circulation, removes dead skin cells, and helps rid the body of toxins.

What do I need to skin brush?
Use a brush made with natural vegetable bristles or a loofah sponge. The brush or sponge should be kept dry. The body should also be dry.

How should I move the brush?
Different techniques exist. Some recommendations suggest that the brush should be passed over the skin in a clean sweeping motion without any back and forth or scrubbing motions, as well as in the direction of the lower abdomen or heart up the legs and arms.

How often should I brush?
Some providers recommend skin brushing once or twice daily and up to four times daily during times of intense toxicity.
